For over 25 years, Killarney Veterinary Surgery has provided veterinary services to farmers and residents of the Southern Darling Downs in Queensland and the Border Ranges area of northern New South Wales.
The practice lives by the mantra, “Always Caring – Always Professional”
Staff members are local people, well known in the community and committed to providing superior service. Appointments are essential but veterinary care is available 24/7 to meet the needs of livestock, horses and pets of clients. Quality, comprehensive, affordable and professional veterinary services are provided whenever and wherever such services are needed – be it at home or on the farm.
Owned and operated by David Thomson BVSc MAICD MAMI since 2002, the practice provides a comprehensive range of services to a diverse rural residential and farming community. Staffed by formally trained nurses, the main clinic is situated in Killarney, Queensland with a branch practice in NSW at Urbenville. Killarney provides a full range of veterinary services to small and large animals alike while the Urbenville clinic operates each Thursday providing routine services and minor surgery as needed by residents of that region.
Killarney provides comprehensive surgical services for both small and large animals including small animal orthopedic procedures. Our small animal patients recover in an air-conditioned hospital facility that is able to provide blood testing, ultrasound and x-ray services as needed.
Horses are stabled at the clinic where they are constantly under the watchful eyes of experienced staff while undergoing treatment.
We regularly attend properties to assist with a large variety of cattle problems; investigating losses or poor performance, calving difficulty, bull breeding soundness for sale or herd use, pregnancy testing including tags for sale, artificial insemination as well as treating individual sick cattle.

Need animal care products?
We stock an extensive range of products at competitive prices and are happy to give you free and accurate advice on the correct product and how to use it.
Flea treatments, worming medication, shampoos, collars, leads, cattle vaccine and drenches, are just a few of the products we stock. Don’t guess which is best – let our qualified Nurses’ help.
Our Veterinarian may be out on a house or farm call, so always telephone ahead to avoid delay when you need to collect medication - don’t inconvenience yourself. Many drugs can only be dispensed by a Veterinarian and our Nurses cannot legally dispense them to you.
“The Grooming Room”
Our English trained groomer, Sarah, has all the skills needed to give your pet a lift when they visit “The Grooming Room”. They can enjoy a “tidy up”, style cut, trim, full clip or just a warm bath. After a blow dry, nails are trimmed and ears plucked – whatever your pet needs. Like all good salons though, demand is solid, so bookings are essential.
“The Grooming Room” operates each weekday except Monday and Thursday.
Use Our Experienced Staff
At Killarney Veterinary Surgery you talk to horse, cattle, dog and cat owners so we understand what you are talking about! Every staff member owns animals – some say too many! Pet dogs and cats, competition horses, breeding horses, cattle, sheep, ducks, chooks and working dogs – so animal care is second nature to us.
There is a wealth of experience, common sense and practical advice available as well as formal training so we can respond professionally to your concerns as they arise.
We Talk
We pride ourselves on keeping you informed and “in the picture” and believe that communication is the key to good outcomes. We endeavour to telephone you or revisit your pet, horse or stock after treatment or surgery to ensure that the original problem has been treated or managed appropriately. We love nothing more than to hear or see our patients on the road to recovery but at the same time we want to know when they aren’t; we are then able to work with you on getting them there sooner
Talking Money
An estimate is a very important part of the information needed when considering various treatment options for your animals, so please ask for an estimate before treatment commences.
To ensure that we can continue to offer great care and service, we request payment to be made at the time of discharge or consultation. We accept cash, cheque, credit card or EFTPOS. Accounts are available to clients with demonstrated need upon application.
In emergency circumstances a repayment plan may be established for approved applicants to cover the emergency treatment and care only.
Why Not Insure?
Pet and horse insurance is a great way to make affording the best care possible. We have information on a wide variety of insurers, just ask our nurses.
